This formation is made of hardened Navajo Sandstone dating the Jurassic Period. It’s red and white striations are often photographed in color for its colors are stunning. I have several times, An Element of the Whole and The Wave, a Study in Color. But this time I wanted BW. I added a red #25 filter to darken the shadows and lighten the red stone to give extra contrast.
It’s perplexing. Landscape photography shows geographic space, that is its canvas. But it’s often subsumed into documentation and when that happens it ceases to be an expression. Sometimes the realism of a place merges with the intention, that the abstraction is replaced with the reality. That’s okay as long as the intention of an expressed feeling is true.
