There is a place in Death Valley where the rocks move. Some are large, very large. This one was the size two basketballs. It’s surreal to walk amongst them. Some have long etched tracks that extend behind them, Where the Rocks Move, Death Valley.
In late afternoon light I walk out onto the playa and find a single boulder. It has no track leading to it so it must have been here a great long time. The clouds are light and airy and I put a wide 50mm lens on my Hasselblad and get close, forcing a singular perspective. The November air is still and warm. What wonderful pleasure it is to be here. Death Valley has creative mystery. It’s a land of harsh realities and yet deep beauty. It’s the merging of this dynamic that draws me photographically to it.
Location: Racetrack Playa, Death Valley NP
