This was the day I identified as a landscape photographer. This is part of a famous formation called the Wave. There are no trails that come here and a lottery permit is required to keep foot traffic low. The hardened red and white striations have featured in many photographs, ad campaigns and calendars. What I saw when I was first here wasn’t the formation in its entirety but a hint of it. That was the revelation. To express something deeper than the landmark, to express something personal.

I look back on this image now over a many year career and appreciate it for what it represents. I’ve been back to this spot several times since, but it was this moment that birthed a passion that still pulls me as strongly as ever.
