Landscape artists search for their subjects out there, what is found is manipulated and merged with whatever is inside to form the final image. It is the rare art form that requires external exploration and internal discipline. Unlike a painter, who forms from within, we landscape photographers create from without. It is exploration and discovery paired with artistic interpretation. You must set aside expectations and the need for ultimate control. That open mindedness is essential when out wandering, looking for subject.

What I found here was expanse, cold limitless expanse. Cold, but not altogether uninviting. I’m obsessed with these large almost monotone color washes. Big sweeps of blue and foreground yellow of grass and dry thistles hardened to a life of high wind and salt air. This is not an easy ecosystem.
