There’s a place in Death Valley where rocks move. The seemingly inexplicable phenomenon is a process of wind tunneling, ice, soft mud and of course rocks. It’s one of those natural occurrences in nature where the perfect conditions exist to present something that seems so out of place as to be unbelievable. I like the explanation of how it happens because it goes right to the heart of being human and curious. What is lost in this forensic description is the poetry of sitting next to one of these stones, with their long tracks leading off. The surrounding desert is immense and still and visceral. And sitting there is a stone, that’s clearly moved. You can’t help but feel a transcendence. Isn’t that what life is for, to seek this very thing.
