We left early, before the others were awake. Just she and I, out for the morning light, for a morning adventure. Shiprock rises like the sentinel it is out of a vast open plain. It was a cloudless morning but the monolith is so crisp and defined against the sky I didn’t need them. I wanted the shadows to go dark, almost black and the sky to remain a light grey.

After, we headed south, and then west over the Chuska Mountains and down to Canyon De Chelly. We spent all morning traveling in this deep mythological place. Areas held sacred by the Dine’ People. She, my mom, is gone now and what’s left are memories of place and experience.

Tsé Bitʼaʼí is pronounced like TSAY Bih-TAH-ee: "TSAY" rhymes with "say", "Bih" is like the "bi" in "big", "TAH" is like "tah" in "father", and "ee" is like the "ee" in "see"
