The Mojave Desert is full of mystery. It’s laced with highways, backroads, and dirt tracks that lead off into every corner. To the west is the Pacific Ocean and L.A., opulence and comfort. To the north is the great Sierra Mountains with thick forests and high alpine lakes. But here, it’s dry and harsh and surreal. People have tried to build innumerable communities and townships, some have stayed able to sequester enough water. Others, have not.
Driving a nondescript backroad I came upon an abandoned development, where the roads and sidewalks had been paved but the palms were all dried stiff and the place smelled of discarded hopes. This was somebody’s project at one point. Now it’s left to slowly decay back into the desert, to be blown clean and forgotten. Come prepared if you venture this way. This place does not look kindly on the foolhardy.
