Utah highway 128, which connects I-70 to highway 191 through Castle Valley, is in the top list for scenic drives of the West. I wandered through mesas and canyons, rivers and towers, all rich in red orange hues. This formation is called Parriott Mesa, and although my image makes it look like a tower, it’s actually a 1.5 mile long mesa made of hardened Wingate Sandstone from the early Jurassic. Throughout the entire Colorado Plateau its geologic makeup is laid bare and easy to read.

This was photographed early in my career and I’m not sure what else I captured this day. I need to dig through my negatives archive and see. I’ve always enjoyed this image, it shows a time I was focused on isolated singular subjects. Abstractions made out of the larger landscape. This would come to define one of my landscape styles that can be seen across my work.
