I’m here early and I have the whole basin to myself. I wander about but eventually find a good rock to just sit and watch. How often do we take the time to do that, just sit and watch with no expectations, no guilt in the act. Up here, everyday, down in the world below, not enough. I pull out my journal and sketch the pattern of the granite stone I’m sitting on and make a few notes.

When did I become an observer of things. Have I always been content to sit and watch. It’s something I’d like to ask my folks, but they’re both gone now and I’m left to wonder. When I was younger the other boys all tended to be better than me at the things boys do; sports, bike jumping, climbing trees. I was always more comfortable by myself, alone with my own imaginations. Perhaps this love of solitude supported a love for observation.
