Morning light moves fast. I had setup to capture the wonderful reflection in Observation and Solitude in a Sierra Basin and was walking away when a singular beam of light illuminated the far shore. Luckily I had my camera hoisted over my shoulder and framed it up fast, estimating the exposure using the previous image. And just like that the light lit the foreground and the mystery was gone, diluted in full sun.
There’s a great saying by Ansel Adams, “chance favoring the prepared mind”. I think about that a lot. Landscape photography is an exercise in discovery. The canvas exists out here and must be found. When I find it, I’m prepared with years of experience and knowledge. I am ready for the accidents to happen.
