This is an image I envision quite often in the High Sierra, especially when the clouds are absent and the light is strong. Distant mountains have sharp edges that stand in beautiful contrast to the deep blue sky. By adding a deep red #25 filter, that blue light is absorbed resulting in dark skies. The shadows, which are lit by that same reflected blue light, also go dark. This creates a study in shape and tonality. An abstraction that I find fascinating.
Because the angle of view with the Hasselblad 903 is so wide, it took time to position myself in a way to only capture this one ridge and nothing else. My work is not about place, even though these images are from a specific place, they’re more about feeling, about an abstracted reality built from silver halide crystals. If you recognize a particular mountain, great. If you recognize a particular feeling, even better.
