When the light is harsh I look for contrasting shapes, tonality studies, and textures. With a red #25 filter over the my lens blue light is absorbed thereby blocking it from the film. The result is anything blue, or being lit by primarily blue light will darken. Under blue sky, shadows are lit with blue light as is water. This can be used creatively to add depth and contrast to an otherwise muted scene.
I also added 10 stops of neutral density to increase my exposure to the point where the waters movement would blur on my film. The result is a textural image that has the sharpness and clarity that the High Sierra alpine air feels like.
