Early evening light is often called magic hour. When the sun is low on the horizon, its intensity decreases, shadows lengthen and the color temperature warms. Photography is many things, but feeling the light is of utmost importance.
I saw that as the sun set it was going to put the entire foreground in shadow while keeping the distant nameless ridge lit. And it is nameless, I could not find its name in my reference materials. With a strong lateral horizon bisecting the image I saw the image in two parts, above and below. Placing Zone IV on the immediate granite near my camera the sky above the peak landed on Zone VI, a nice range that I could easily add some contrast to later if needed.
