This tree in a city park in the town of Bellingham Washington has always drawn me. What I was after was a hard edge abstraction, to show the essence of the thing. I wanted it to be almost two tones, like a wood block print. Still wanting a little detail in the trunk I kept that part at Zone III, just above a deep black. The branches I saw as ink line drawings. There was no need to show the whole tree. This is how some landscapes are, not grand vistas, but a detailed study in graphics.
