I’ve been in love with dualities my whole creative life. It’s what essentially drew me to black and white photography. Duality in art, like that in the Taoist Taijitu symbol is most powerful with the inclusion of the opposite within each. It is the recognition that a piece of the other exists in each and that gives strength to the separation. It is a giving as much as a taking and to find that in your subject is to see its deeper beauty.

Duality is also balance and balance is the most important element in composition. An unbalanced image leads to visual instability and introduces unnecessary tension. Now, tension introduced through compositional balance is different, it’s not born of poor execution but purposeful direction to enhance whatever it is you want to say. Use that, be mindful of it for it’ll make your images more powerful and more interesting.
