Along the western slope of the Cascade Range water affords density. Moss, fir trees, brush, lichen, alders. It’s all here in a cacophony of life that is a mess to look at. A landscape photographer must look to find structure in the chaos. The various shades of green are separated in black and white by the use of colored filters. I was walking this early morning after an evening rainstorm. The forest was dark under a dense canopy but every now and then pockets of open forest lit the undergrowth with a subtle brilliance. I was in search of an interesting arrangement within the confused vegetation. I found it in the simple form of two trees. I liked the background mesh of tangled foliage. I don’t often photograph these kinds of scenes. I typically prefer clean lines and obvious subjects. But there’s something in this messiness I find comforting.
