I walk along with my young daughter. In her hands is small polaroid camera with just a few frames left. She likes the immediacy of holding a print right after photographing. It’s the epitome of analog and the opposite of digital. I teach to her to look and think about what she wants to shoot before pressing the shutter, the polaroid prints in her camera are not limitless. She sees these leaves in the underbrush before I do and wanders over. She shoots on frame and it’s beautiful. I take out my camera and frame up my own image, but without my tripod I too am limited in my choices and must underexpose by two stops. But I know it’ll be interesting, with no highlights, no middle grays, it’s how the rich undergrowth of the coastal Oregon forest feels. A bit dark, a bit mysterious but always full of life.
