Sometimes I feel I’m seeing an imperfect nature through my lens, like my ancestors that came before, tore out the best passages and left in their wake a kind of tame copy of what was. I try to imagine a time, long before, where animals long dead and mature forests long cut, existed. I wish desperately to know the entirety of a thing. But maybe this is naive.

We are left with the remains of manifest destiny, itself a remnant of some earlier time when mammoths and giant camels walked the Americas. So when is the time to know something in its entirety. Romantically I’d say it’s before man, before any man. But this assumes an untouched clarity and although the natural balances were in better order then I’m not so sure a better creative clarity could be had. For I am of this time not that time. It’s an intriguing thought as I watch water flow through the forest.
