I want to talk about structure in art. In writing and music structure is easy to see and hear, but in the visual arts it’s more complex. The boundaries are gray allowing for more interpretation. Composition, the arranging of objects within your frame, has no hard rules the breaking of which would leave the viewer disoriented. It’s this open canvas that allows for a wider breadth of visual experimentation.

I come back to dualities in my work a lot. The very nature of black and white photography lends itself to this. But beyond the monochromatic tonalities I’m often drawn to parallels within my landscapes. A mirroring of heaven and earth. There’s allegory in that, allegory and tension.

The structure of this print was intentional and not by accident. With a mind that was beside itself in artistic excitement I tracked this storm all afternoon and wanted to show the delineation between sky and land, a heaven and an earth. But in that strict border there are fingers outstretched, reaching across temporal realities to touch the other. Much like within ourselves.
