Overlooking Big Bear Lake the unnamed northern peak of Seven Gables looms large and sharp. There’s a route to the summit up the draw in the left side of the image. I didn’t try it this time, maybe next time. In the clump of trees on the far right is the JMT, down a long bushwhack. I’ll be heading that way in a few days. Before that happens my camera will break, but I don’t know that yet, standing on this granite rise photographing.

But here I can see the fascinating geology, the way it fissures and folds, where extinct glaciers ground vertical walls, where freeze thaw have made mincemeat of seeming impenetrable rock. I’m simply awed.
