The geographic diversity around Bend Oregon keeps this landscape photographer busy. Just north of town, the Crooked River carves deep canyons into layers of volcanic rock. The trail ends at the rivers edge. Another hiker tells me of the rattlesnake she saw a half hour earlier. I look but can’t find it. The clouds are slowly moving and I cup my hand into a tube and look, counting how long they take to move. I want cloud movement in the final image and this gives a good estimate of the shutter time I’ll need. About 3 minutes. I load the film, attach a 10-stop ND filter, and lock open the shutter. All quite mechanical, but the peace the act brings is profound and wonderful and magic.
