It was a calm early afternoon on 12,000 foot Glen Pass along the eastern edge of Kings Canyon. I sat under sun and blue sky with not a breath of wind. Poor photography conditions, but wonderful to sit and just be. Another hiker joins me dropping his pack with the universal sigh of having hiked steep miles. And it is steep to get here. He doesn’t look at me as he sits and pulls out his phone asking how far until Rae Lakes. I point north and slightly down, we can see the lakes from this high perch I say. But it’s only one o’clock he says. He asks what is he to do when he gets there in an hour. He sounds exhausted and a little frustrated. I tell him that Rae Lakes is stunning, to lay out on a rock, strip and swim, draw a picture, just be in it. But he doesn’t hear me, he’s still looking at his phone mumbling about miles and time. It all seems to be a job for him. And then, with another deep sigh, he hoists up his pack and is gone. So it goes.
