This is a delicious summer evening. I casually stroll around my little lake capturing this and that. Solitude is a good thing. All my life I’ve been comfortable alone. What I seek out here is not merely to be alone but to be alone while seeking a connection to the landscape. This connection is where landscape art resides. And so I stand alone in a mountain basin, a kind of mountain bowl, enclosed by thousands of feet of granite. I stand in its middle, breathing the cooled air and feel the warmth of sun at altitude.
I wonder if I capture solitary subjects as a reflection of this. Often seeking lone rocks, sea stacks, trees, the creative isolates like me. Perhaps I have some unknown connection to these things. I don’t question why I choose a particular subject, when it feels right I photograph.
