If you’ve ever read the comic series Calvin and Hobbes this is the environment Bill Watterson used in sketches for Calvin’s alter ego Spaceman Spiff. Hardened red rocks and sparse vegetation. This area is laced with alcoves, bowls, faces and bluffs all shaped by wind. It’s one of the most beautiful areas of the Colorado Plateau.
After photographing at the iconic Wave formation I make my way back across the trackless Jurassic Navajo Sandstone. This island butte has no name, and that’s okay. I like its isolation and striations. I use a red filter to soak up some of the red colorization of the rocks while also deepening the shadows, both will add nice contrast.
