On the backside of a little known off-trail pass called Granite Bear the slope is a subtle rise of granite gravel. It’s an easy stroll to the top where the pass drops off to the east with a large block of snow and ice blocking the way. I stay up here all morning watching a storm roll in. It’s peaceful and delicate and nice. I can see the way I entered this basin down to the right over another off-trail pass a few days before. I wait for the storm to slide into view, covering the top half of my frame. Summer in the High Sierra is sublime, there’s really no other word for it. It plucks the string chords of your soul and you can’t help but feel joyful and free and at peace.
