What does it mean to shoot on film? Not the practical, simply load a camera with a roll of film, but the intangible. Film has no immediacy, no direct gratification, it is the opposite of quick. The uncertainty of a capture adds to the weight of choice, forces a patience and an internal dialogue. I’m not always sure what I’m getting, even after 25 years of shooting landscape on film, there’s an unknowable quality that is as alluring as the landscape itself. I do not seek flawlessness, for that pursuit ignores the beauty in uncertain outcomes.

I camped under this ridge for two days and would have my coffee sitting on a camp boulder watching its face change with the light. By midmorning the days storm was starting to build over Feather Pass and I framed up the scene to isolate the ridge and enhance the closed off feeling this whole basin exudes. Not a bad morning.
