Resupply. My pack is back to full weight and there’s a long pass ahead but that crossing is tomorrow morning. I’m in no hurry. I stop at a little lake and wander to its far side to setup camp in a wooded dell. The eastern slope of the Sierra is essentially a wall of granite 400 miles long. Along this escarpment are ways into the mountains, and all are steep. The pass trail I’m on is an ancient one, used by peoples who were here long before Europeans arrived. It’s the easiest east-west route if you want to traverse the range.

I woke this morning to sleet and snow many miles and two passes north. The storm has unfortunately dissipated and it’s clear skies again.

After a small dinner I walk over the lake and bushwhack my way to a boulder sticking out of the brush. The east end of the lake looks almost like an infinity pool because this lake is halfway up the eastern slope of the range. Beyond this it drops down to the desert floor of Owens Valley. The sun is behind me and I position my shadow so its hidden in the other shadows.
